Steve Kaufman, Clean Asset Partners' Managing Director, has over 25 years of experience in sustainable energy and environmental protection. As Clean Asset Partners Corp's Managing Director, Steve has evaluated Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) regulations and business opportunities in numerous US jurisdictions, interfaced regularly with key Massachusetts regulatory staff, led the establishment of Clean Assets Partners' Massachusetts SREC and REC aggregations and other services, and managed successful forward contract arrangements believed to be among the first forward contracts, if not the first, in the Massachusetts SREC market. Steve has substantial experience engaging in commercial transactions with electricity suppliers in Massachusetts and the New England region.

As Principal Consultant with Sunrise Technologies Consulting, Steve completed a range of assignments for commercial, non-profit, and government clients. Example assignments include evaluating carbon market opportunities in the northeastern United States, assessing and facilitating international carbon market participation for renewable energy and energy efficiency applications in numerous countries, and helping the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands develop a framework to facilitate the participation of off-grid and mini-grid renewable energy projects in the international carbon market. Steve founded, and for six years served as Executive Director of, Green Markets International, a non-profit organization that helped expand carbon market access for distributed energy and other projects with substantial local benefits. He also led an initiative to advance financial and commercial innovations for solar energy applications, focusing on carbon and REC market activities and fee-for-service arrangements, that was nominated for a World Clean Energy Award in 2007.

From 1990 to 1996 Steve worked with Enersol Associates and Soluz Inc. planning and raising capital to implement PV-based rural electrification projects in the Caribbean and Latin America. Prior to that, he worked with the consulting firm Eastern Research Group, and with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (then DEQE) where he headed three projects sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop emissions trading policy and other mechanisms to reduce compliance costs in acid rain control programs. A graduate of the New England Fuel Institute’s solar training program, Steve started his career working in the solar energy industry in Massachusetts, installing and maintaining solar water heating systems.

Steve holds a BA in Economics from Drew University and a MA in Energy and Environmental Studies from Boston University.
